What qualifications do you need to work in a Zoo in Scotland?
Entry is competitive. Zoos vary in the qualifications they require but qualifications at SCQF level 4/5 or a relevant work-base qualification such as a Scottish Vocational Qualification in Animal Care (SVQ level 2/3) would be recommended.

You can do a foundation degree, higher national diploma or degree in:
- animal or zoo management.
- animal behaviour and welfare.
- zoology or marine zoology.
- animal conservation and biodiversity.
- veterinary science.

Can I work in the Zoo?
To be a zoo keeper you need a minimum of higher education qualification or degree level in zoo animal management/ zoological related science – for example Diploma in Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals (DMZAA) – or have equivalent experience.

Is Edinburgh Zoo wheelchair friendly?
The Zoo is situated on the side of Corstorphine Hill and some areas of the park on a steep incline. The majority of the paths around the Zoo can be accessed by wheelchair. Due to the hilly nature of our location, some routes involve steps or steep slopes which are unsuitable for wheelchair users.
Can you take your dog to Edinburgh Zoo?
Are dogs allowed in the Zoo? Fully trained guide-dogs for the visually impaired are permitted entry to the Park but please be aware that certain restrictions apply. Guide dogs in training and other pets are not permitted into Edinburgh Zoo as they can cause stress to some of our animals.
Do you need work experience to work at Edinburgh Zoo?
Work Experience. To work with animals at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo you must be over 18. Edinburgh Zoo has a policy of not accepting personal work experience requests. We tend to only give long-term placements to students studying an animal-related qualification at a university with which we are affiliated .
